Undisciplined is an experiment in interactive, public-oriented, social justice-centered education. The goal of Undisciplined is to present curricula and pedagogy that challenges the social and academic conventions around the production and circulation of knowledge and intelligence. As a political praxis Undisciplined advances its own pedagogical philosophy to generate new mediums, and sites of learning, for equitable innovation in science and technology. Undisciplined exist within educational interstices to foster nuanced definitions and collaborations around education.

The debut project for Undisciplined advances a prototype curriculum for social justice centered AI computer science education.

Through the creation of what I call pedagogical art (art that is designed to teach) I establish various intersections between computing, AI, and the black ancestral knowledge that informs Gullah Geechee heritage. Comprising three works, through each I build out learning exercises, interactive workshops, and informative lectures.

The art cum curriculum is an invitation to explore how African and African diasporic cultural perspectives and local knowledge systems woven into data collection and processing has the potential to generate new frameworks for algorithms, statistical models, and computation-based scientific inquiry.

Into the Black Box is a genre-bending film that coalesces screendance, music storytelling, and machine learning. The film is divided into 3 chapters and tells 3 narratives in non-chronological order that mirror each other. While the visuals narrate an African American researcher who uses her own African ancestral knowledge to open a portal to an alternate present, a matrix in which she prepares to build a technology for her community, the music and dance within the film offer an encrypted narration. By training machine learning algorithms to compute sequences, gestures, poses, audio, and visuals within the film, the viewer can watch the film through an app in which alternate meanings within the film will be disclosed. The viewers who do understand all levels of narration will gain access to a matrix.

Kuona is a large scale extended reality digital collage that is a semantic network envisioning the logical and technical pathways to design an AI infrastructure (hardware, software, and data architectures)  through a Gullah Geechee cultural lens. In Artificial Intelligence, a semantic network serves as a graphical representation of knowledge in the form of interconnected nodes and links. These connections depict the relationships between different concepts, providing a structured framework for organizing and processing information. Semantic networks are a way of representing relationships between objects and ideas.
